Best known to teenage girls as the star of ABC Family’s drama “Pretty Little Liars,” 22-year-old Ashley Benson will make her jump to movie stardom in 2013. In March, a bikini-clad Benson will appear with Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and James Franco in the buzzed-about film “Spring Breakers.”

Shooting a three-way with Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco was ‘awkward’ and ‘different,’ Ashley tells HollywoodLife.com.

Don’t let the title fool you: filming Spring Breakers was no day at the beach, especially for Ashley Benson, who had the harrowing task of getting down to business with co-stars Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco — and I do mean business. “I think the hardest part was probably the threesome,” Ashley recently told HollywoodLife.com. “I have never done that before; it was a very new experience.”

Ashley, 22, credits her co-stars for easing her into the process and helping her navigate the treacherous waters of group sex.

“I was able to do it with Vanessa, who is one of my closest friends now, and James, who is one of my closest friends now,” she explained. “That made it easier. But anything with any intimacy is always awkward. It’s still awkward for me on [Pretty Little Liars]. It’s a whole different thing, but it was fun, and we got through it!”

And Ashley’s group scene is just one of the many ways she thinks fans will be surprised by her racy new role.

“The character was so different from anything I’ve ever done!” she said. “Vanessa and I had to play really insane girls, almost psychotic. They are crazy. It was exhausting. I just wanted to go get my nails done, or hang out in my hotel, because things were so extreme.”

Ashley Benson is set to appear in a January episode, playing a character somehow close to Barney (Neil Patrick Harris).

File this under late night Twitter developments: Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson is heading to How I Met Your Mother.

CBS confirms Wednesday’s cryptic announcement — “#PrettyLittleLiars’ @AshBenzo is going to guest star as Barney’s???? on Jan. 21! Suit Up!” — that the ABC Family star recently taped a guest spot for the comedy’s eighth season.

And while the news of a Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) storyline hints that Benson might play one of the lady-killer’s many (would-be) conquests, the character isn’t technically on the market. Barney, again pushing Robin (Cobie Smulders) to the side, has been dating his ex’s nemesis, Patrice (Ellen D. Williams).

Fans won’t have to wait long to find out what exactly Benson is doing on the show. After Monday’s one-hour Christmas outing (with guest Seth Green), the episode in question will be the second of the new year. That’s just two weeks after Pretty Little Liars returns.

Ashley was spotted out at Kitson Studio for the Get Festive with Frankie B soiree in West Hollywood on Dec 6. Other notable ladies in the crowd were Kimora Lee Simmons, Lisa Vanderpump, and Kelly Rutherford.

Ashley Benson keeps it classy as she attends Monika Chiang’s One Year Anniversary Celebration at the Robertson Blvd store on Wednesday night (December 5) in West Hollywood, Calif.
